SOL 3, 2021Glen Tanar, 5 September
The Sunday event of the double-SOL weekend was a different challenge from the previous day - long, hilly courses, and tough underfoot conditions.
The third Scottish Orienteering League event of 2021 was at Glen Tanar, near Aboyne on Deeside, organised by Mar Orienteering Club. This area was used for Day 1 of the 2017 Scottish 6 Days. It covers several hills, mostly mature conifer forest with heather and blaeberry, often quite rough underfoot. Most courses had a lot of climb. The longer courses encountered tall bracken, and also open marshland, and the very longest courses visited some intricate contours and rock features in the far east of the map. The weather was fine and sunny. Unfortunately the main thing that most will remember from this event was the huge number of ticks that everyone picked up.
ESOC members in the top half of the results for their course were:
Blue (44) – Rachel Brown 7th, Keith Brown 19th
Short Blue (42) – Mark Wood 6th, Crawford Lindsay 13th
Green (33) – Richard Oxlade 2nd, Roger Garnett 7th, Maja Robertson 17th
Short Green (41) – Sally Lindsay 4th
Light Green (19) – Megan Brown 8th
Orange (14) – Calum Robertson 1st
White (5) – Maria O’Hara 1st
This SOL event was held in conjunction with the 2021 Senior Home International Individual event. ESOC’s Katrina McLeod and Rona Lindsay were in the Scotland team. Scotland were in the lead after the previous day’s Relays at Balmedie, and did well in the Individual event too, winning the overall competition.
Full results are available on the Glen Tanar SOL results page of the MAROC website, and Routegadget for the event is here.
