SOL5 - 2010Birsemore - 5 September
The 5th event in the 2010 Scottish Orienteering League was organised by MAROC, at Birsemore, near Aboyne, on Deeside. Since many people were already in the area for the 11-person relay the previous day, there was a good turnout from ESOC.
Birsemore is a varied and technical area, with lots of contours throughout, featuring semi-open moorland, open runnable woodland, and steep rocky slopes with many crags and boulders. A remote start allowed the longer courses to take in the full variety of terrain, finishing at the assembly area. There was a bus shuttle running all day between the assembly area and parking in Aboyne, and this arrangement seemed to work very efficiently. The weather was dry and breezy, and sunny later on, so it was a very pleasant day.
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Brown (25 competitors) – Ray Ward 9th
Short Brown (46) – Claire Ward 6th, Mike Stewart 23rd
Blue (53) – Andrew Lindsay 2nd, Rona Lindsay 5th, Craig Nolan 9th, Dave Kershaw 25th, Helena Nolan 26th, Crawford Lindsay 27th
Short Blue (40) – Sally Lindsay 17th, Ian Pyrah 19th
Green (48) – Margaret Dalgleish 15th
Short Green (22) – Anne Stevenson 6th, Janet Clark 11th
This event was also the Northern Lights Trophy competition – Andrew Lindsay won the M16 trophy, Rona Lindsay won W18 (running up), and Claire Ward won W21.
