SoSOL5 – 2013/14South Achray, 16 February
A large ESOC contingent competed at the fifth South of Scotland Orienteering League event this season, which was presented by Forth Valley Orienteers.
South Achray is part of Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, and lies just north of Aberfoyle. There’s a good path network near the park visitor centre, and there were plenty of visitors around, especially on the distracting zip wire. Away from the paths, the terrain was mostly rough, and very steep in the upper parts visited by the longer courses, which also had some deep stream crossings assisted by ropes. The lower parts were also challenging, with brambles, thick scrub and deep dead bracken. The weather was warm and sunny, though it was very wet underfoot following all the recent rain.
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Brown (28 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 11th, Craig Nolan 13th
Short Brown (22) – Jim Martin 10th
Blue Women (36) – Claire Ward 2nd, Heather Thomson 12th, Rona Lindsay 14th
Blue Men (33) – Keith Brown 17th
Green Women (34) – Alison Cunningham 7th, Judy Bell 13th, Sally Lindsay 16th, Margaret Dalgleish 17th
Green Men (31) – Alastair Lessells 10th
Short Green (27) – Eleanor Pyrah 11th, Fiona Findlay 13th, Jim Clark 14th
White (7) – Megan Brown 4th
This was also the Scottish heat for the CompassSport Cup. ESOC did not enter the competition this year, due to the difficulty of raising a team for the final (in Hampshire in November) if we qualified.
