Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

SoSOL5, 2018Windy Hill, 9 September

Clydeside Orienteers presented the fifth event in this year’s South of Scotland Orienteering League.

Windy Hill is in Muirshiel Country Park, which lies SW of Glasgow, in the hills above Lochwinnoch. Registration and Download were in the Muirshiel Visitor Centre, and the start was on the hillside above. The terrain is open moorland, mostly tussocky grassland, with some heather. It was boggy in places, and there were several areas of intricate contour detail. The longer courses descended to reach a loop of controls in hummocky terrain on the other side of the River Calder, then climbed again to the woodland above the visitor centre, where the final controls for all courses were located. ESOC’s Roger Scrutton was the controller for this event.
The hill was indeed windy, and although it was warm when the sun was out, there were also persistent showers, making more challenging conditions.

ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Blue (24 competitors) – Ben Brown 9th, Keith Brown 10th, Finlay Ross 11th, Terry Johnstone 12th
Green (31) – Rachel Brown 1st, Roger Garnett 3rd, Kerry Wood 4th, Alastair Lessells 7th, Jim Morrison 14th, Judy Bell 15th
Short Green (11) – Rona Lindsay (injured) 1st, Katy Lessells 5th, Anne Stevenson 6th
Yellow (5) – Megan Brown 1st

Full results and further details are on the Windy Hill event item on the CLYDE website.
