SOUL 1 - 2015Riccarton, 31 January
This year’s ESOC Sprint was the first event of the 2015 Scottish Orienteering Urban League, and part of ESOC’s 50th Anniversary weekend, with a great turnout and some excellent ESOC results.
Heriot-Watt University’s Riccarton campus, on the west side of Edinburgh, has a surprising variety of terrain, including complex modern buildings set in parkland and woodland, with a lake and other water features. This was a two-part race, with a chasing start for the second part. There was plenty of route choice, and fast and furious head-to-head competition in the Chase, as runners dashed in all directions amongst the baffling buildings, butterfly loops adding to the confusion. The weather was fine but cool, and underfoot conditions were better than expected, after snow and ice earlier in the week.
ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
M Open (16 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 3rd
M Vet (29) – Ray Ward 1st
M SuperVet (24) – Mike Stewart 6th
M UltraVet (13) – Ian Pyrah 3rd
W Open (14) – Rona Lindsay 5th
W Vet (19) – Helena Nolan 4th, Alison Cunningham 6th
W SuperVet (13) – Maggie Scrugham 3rd, Mary Williams 4th
W Ultravet (9) – Eleanor Pyrah 3rd, Fiona Findlay 5th
WJun (8) – Rachel Brown 2nd, Lucie Duffy 3rd, Kerry Wood 4th
Commiserations to Heather Thomson, who had the fastest time in the Women’s Veteran class, but had picked up the wrong map in the Prologue, then re-started her course and declared herself non-competitive.
