SOUL 3, 2020Johnshaven, 7 March
The third event in the 2020 Scottish Orienteering Urban League was presented by MAROC as part of their Deeside weekend, featuring urban and forest events.
SOUL 3 was at Johnshaven, a fishing village on the Aberdeenshire coast. The event centre was at Lathallan School, NE of the village centre, and the terrain included narrow streets and alleyways in the village, as well as the extensive grounds of the school. Men’s and Women’s Open had Sprint races, with Urban courses for the other classes.
The weather was dull but dry, with a cool breeze.

W Open (16 competitors) – Helen Bridle 1st
M Vet (19) – Terry Johnstone 9th
W Vet (7) – Hanne Robertson 4th
W Supervet (15) – Sally Lindsay 8th=
M Ultravet (12) – Crawford Lindsay 1st, Les Dalgleish 7th

Some ESOC members travelled a little further north for an event the next day on Deeside, at Birsemore Hill, Aboyne, scene of SOL 1 in 2019. This is a varied technical area in coniferous forest, with gentle undulating ground on the top of the hill, and complicated rocky terrain on the steep northern slopes. Recent thinning had left many extraction lanes and it was quite rough. The start was fairly low, so the courses had a lot of climb.
ESOC results:
Brown (27 competitors) – Helen Bridle 12th
Blue (43) – Rachel Brown 1st, Maja Robertson 13th, Crawford Lindsay 34th
Green (32) – Margaret Dalgleish 10th, Sally Lindsay 11th, Les Dalgleish 23rd
Full results, Routegadget and further details are in the Birsemore event item on the MAROC website.
