Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

SOUL 4 - 2014Glasgow, 11 May

There was a strong ESOC presence, and some great results, at the 4th event in this year’s Scottish Orienteering Urban League, organised by STAG - St Andrew’s Orienteering Club (Glasgow).

This was a new map, offering a different perspective on the centre of Glasgow. Senior courses started outside the People’s Palace on Glasgow Green and headed off into the busy East End. The courses offered plenty of contrasts: residential areas old and new; city centre shopping streets; modern office blocks; grand Victorian architecture; dark and narrow alleyways; complicated buildings and pathways around Strathclyde University and Caledonian University; open spaces on Glasgow Green. There were some steep hills, and hazards included queues of traffic on some of the roads, crowds of Celtic fans heading for the match that afternoon, and bemused shoppers and tourists in the pedestrian areas. Junior courses stayed on Glasgow Green and Flesher’s Haugh, to avoid the busy road crossings.
Registration and download were in the elegant Winter Gardens of the People’s Palace, which provided very good indoor facilities including a café and toilets.
The weather was sunny and warm at first, then clouded over, with rain later after the courses had closed.

ESOC results in the top half of their class were:
Veteran Men 40+ (27) – Chris Lewis 10th, Mark Wood 13th=
Veteran Women 40+ (15) – Heather Thomson 1st, Helena Nolan 2nd
Supervet Men 55+ (23) – Martin Caldwell 3rd, Mike Stewart 5th, Crawford Lindsay 7th
Supervet Women 55+ (12) – Maggie Scrugham 3rd, Margaret Dalgleish 6th
Ultravet Men 65+ (9) – Roger Scrutton 2nd, Alastair Lessells 3rd
Ultravet Women 65+ (8) – Janet Clark 3rd, Katy Lessells 4th
