SOUL 5, 2018Menzieshill, Dundee, 8 July

The fifth event in the 2018 Scottish Orienteering Urban League was organised by Tayside Orienteers.

A small band of 16 ESOC members headed north to Dundee to take part in this event. The event centre and parking was at Tayview Primary School in Dundee. The competition area was on the hill behind Ninewells hospital and the longer courses were planned to encounter a few climbs. As Fiona mentions below, there was a low entry of around 55 competitors. Nevertheless ESOC members who were able to make the trip enjoyed the event.

Fiona Findlay enjoyed the event and reports:
"The last time I ran in such heat was several years ago when a group from ESOC went to the French 5 Day when it was in the SW of the country. Pre-race preparation included hydration and slapping on the sunscrean. Luckily for Ian and Eleanor, who were helping, the start was under some trees.
This area had been mapped last year as a training area for the British Squad's pre-woc training and lived up to its expectations. Roads, streets, paths, car parks, play areas, open areas and blocks of flats with identical drying areas. It was vital to stay in contact with the map.
Unfortunate timing during the school holidays led to a small entry but I am sure such a good area will be used again and I highly recommend it if you like urban."

ESOC members turned in some good results with the following in the top half of their class:
W Vet (4 competitors) – Helena Nolan 1st
W Supervet (8) – Alison Cunningham 1st,
M Ultravet (6) – Roger Scrutton 3rd
W Ultravet (5) – Eleanor Pyrah 2nd, Fiona Findlay 3rd
M Junior (2) – Jamie Lawlor 1st
M Young Junior (2) – Rowan Lawlor 2nd
