SOUL 5 / SOL 6 – 2013Banchory, 5/6 October
This double-header weekend was presented by Mar Orienteering Club, with an urban race round the streets of Banchory on Saturday and a forest event nearby on Sunday.
SOUL 5, the 5th event in the 2013 Scottish Orienteering Urban League, was on Saturday 5 October, starting from Banchory Sports Centre. Many had visited this area previously for the Sprint event at the Jubilee Five weekend in 2012. Banchory is quite hilly, so most courses had significant climb. They criss-crossed through various different styles of housing estate, and longer courses visited several small woods. Although there were some alleyways, and a few interesting route choices round the complicated buildings of Banchory Academy, there were comments that there was a lot of straightforward running along suburban streets. The weather was very mild, and sunny some of the time.
ESOC members in the top half of the results for their class were:
M SuperVet (13 competitors) – Crawford Lindsay 6th
M UltraVet (9) – Alastair Lessells 4th
M Young Juniors (26) – Ben Brown 11th
W Open (11) – Rona Lindsay 6th
W SuperVet (12) – Sally Lindsay 5th
W UltraVet (7) – Katy Lessells 2nd
W Young Juniors (13) – Rachel Brown 5th

SOL 6, the 6th event in the 2013 Scottish Orienteering League, was at Wood of Easter Clune, just south of Finzean, on Sunday 6 October. This is a fairly small area on a forested hill, and there were double-sided maps for the longer courses, which visited an open area to the east of the forest as well. The forest was quite varied, but mostly rough underfoot. There were some steep-sided rocky valleys, and lots of rock and contour detail, giving plenty of scope for confusion. The weather continued mild and dry; underfoot conditions were good and surprisingly clean.
ESOC members in the top half of the results for their course were:
Brown (21 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 2nd, Craig Nolan 7th
Blue (58) – Finlay Ross 14th, Roger Garnett 16th, Crawford Lindsay 23rd
Short Blue (39) – Keith Brown 1st, Alastair Lessells 3rd, Roger Scrutton 15th
Green (43) – Mark Wood 3rd, Sally Lindsay 14th
Short Green (32) – Anne Stevenson 1st, Fiona Findlay 4th, Jim Clark 12th, Janet Clark 14th
Yellow (24) – Rachel Brown 7th
