SOUL 6 - 2014St Andrews, 29 June
The 6th event in this year’s Scottish Orienteering Urban League was organised by ESOC in St Andrews, and was a score event. As well as helping, ESOC members had good results in many classes.
The urban score course was on a double-sided map, with some overlap so that the start appeared on both sides. One side showed the modern buildings of the university’s science campus, the surrounding parkland and halls of residence, and the other side showed the town centre of St Andrews, with many alleyways and the old buildings of the university colleges. There were 38 controls in all, with a variety of scores, a time limit of 60 minutes, and a stiff penalty of 1 point per 3 seconds late.
Some tricky control locations offered plenty of route choice, and the challenge of working out the best combination to go for, while keeping within the time limit.
There was also a park score for the under-16s, with all controls all in the campus and parkland, avoiding any no road crossings.
The weather was mostly fine, with a few spots of rain.
ESOC results in the top half of their class were:
Men’s Open (12 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 2nd
Veteran Men 40+ (14) – Chris Lewis 2nd, Mark Wood 3rd, Keith Brown 6th
Veteran Women 40+ (10) – Helena Nolan 4th
Supervet Men 55+ (16) – Crawford Lindsay 3rd
Supervet Women 55+ (7) – Janice Nisbet 3rd
