SOUL 6/7, 2016 - Sprint ScotlandFalkirk/Grangemouth, 16/17 July

Janet Clark reports on the Sprint Scotland events.

Everyone found it hard to explain to their non-orienteering friends that they were going to spend the weekend racing around the streets of Falkirk and Grangemouth. "I love sprint racing" and "There was nothing else on this weekend" were among the options in the post-event survey.

The event attracted a rather small but very varied entry; from international athletes to the very youngest (under ten) to the very oldest (over eighty). Many participated in a full four-day programme of training and racing (and complained about their legs being tired). Some only ran the WRE/UKOL/SOUL (World Ranking Event/UK Orienteering League/Scottish Orienteering Urban League) events in their quest for points. Everyone had a really good time.

The weather was cool and dry and ideal for racing, the courses were intricate and provoked the usual discussions about route choice and map legibility. The event centres on both days were capacious indoor rooms where everyone could camp and socialise. We never did find out why there were so many showers and only two toilets at Hallglen. Graham Gristwood and Fanni delivered a splendid activity weekend for everyone.

Prizes were only awarded to those who had run all three races on the Saturday/Sunday. ESOC prize winners were:
Male Young Juniors: 2nd Calum Robertson
Women Young Juniors: 1st Maja Robertson, 3rd Megan Brown
Women's Veterans: 2nd Helena Nolan
Women's Ultra Veterans: 3rd Fiona Findlay

The full results can be found here, and further information, including event bulletins, is available on the Sprint Scotland 2016 website.
Details of all the SOUL 2016 events, and the final league tables, are on the Urban League 2016 page of the Scottish Orienteering Association website.

Saturday's event was the 14th in the 2016 UK Orienteering League. League tables and other details about this league are on the UK Orienteering League website.
