SOUL 7 - 2014Aberdeen, 30 August
A select group of ESOC members travelled north to Aberdeen for the 7th event in this year’s Scottish Orienteering Urban League, with some excellent results.
SOUL 7 was organised by GRAMP in Balgownie (in Bridge of Don, on the north side of Aberdeen), an area that has recently been remapped. This is a mixed urban area, mainly modern housing, which turned out to be more interesting than it looked, as there was plenty of route choice along pathways and alleys between the houses. Courses ran downhill to a mill lade near the River Don and into a complicated new development near old mill buildings, before returning rather steeply to the finish area among playing fields.
The weather was mostly fine, with a couple of light showers.
ESOC results in the top half of their class were:
Men’s Open (11 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 4th, Craig Nolan 5th
Women’s Open (6) – Rona Lindsay 3rd
Veteran Men 40+ (16) – Mark Wood 5th
Veteran Women 40+ (12) – Heather Thomson 1st, Helena Nolan 3rd
Supervet Men 55+ (15) – Crawford Lindsay 4th
Supervet Women 55+ (4) – Janice Nisbet 2nd
Ultravet Men 65+ (5) – Roger Scrutton 1st
Ultravet Women 65+ (5) – Janet Clark 3rd
Young Junior Women 12- (3) – Rachel Brown 1st

A few made a weekend of it, staying on for another GRAMP event on Sunday 31 August, at Glen Dye near Banchory. The forest there is mostly Scots pine, open and runnable, with plenty of variety: complex moraine features and tricky contour detail; streams to cross; some open heathery ground with many grassy depressions; flatter open marshy areas. The undergrowth was full of ripe blueberries, and it was quite wet underfoot, though it was a warm sunny day.
ESOC results were:
Brown (18 competitors) – Andrew Lindsay 2nd
Blue (31) – Heather Thomson 11th, Crawford Lindsay 21st
Green (30) – Rona Lindsay 4th, Sally Lindsay 13th
Full results from both events are available on the Grampian Orienteers website.
