Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

SOUL 7, 2018Summerston & Gilshochill, 26 August

There was a great turnout and good results from ESOC for STAG’s Scottish Orienteering Urban League event in Glasgow, despite wet weather.

Summerston is NW of Glasgow city centre, and the event was based at the John Paul Academy, with very welcome indoor facilities. Courses started in the school grounds, and zig-zagged around the surrounding housing estates, where there was plenty of route choice along many small pathways, and also crossed open areas and playing fields. The longest courses had a few controls south of the railway line in Gilshochill, and junior courses had some controls along the Kelvin Walkway, further N. Many commented that the area was quite varied, and surprisingly hilly. The weather was unfortunately wet, and care was needed on the grassed areas.

ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
M Open (9 competitors) – Ben Brown 3rd, Craig Nolan 4th
M Vet (14) – Mark Wood 5th, Jim Martin 6th
W Vet (7) – Helena Nolan 3rd, Hanne Robertson 4th
M Supervet (15) – Keith Brown 3rd
W Supervet (9) – Alison Cunningham 1st
M Ultravet (13) – Martin Caldwell 1st, Alastair Lessells 3rd, Roger Scrutton 7th
W Ultravet (6) – Janice Nisbet 2nd
W Hypervet (2) – Janet Clark 1st
W Junior (1) – Rachel Brown 1st
M Young Junior (5) – Rowan Lawlor 2nd , Calum Robertson 3rd
W Young Junior (5) – Maja Robertson 1st, Megan Brown 2nd
