SSOF 2018Pollok Country Park, 1 June

ESOC juniors enjoyed the 2018 Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Festival, and won in two classes.

The Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Festival takes place annually in early June. This year the event was at Pollok Country Park in SW Glasgow, the largest park in the city, and was based at Lochinch Sports Pavilion, on the west side of the park. As well as the ESOC juniors competing, some ESOC members were helping on the day.

The terrain includes woodland, open parkland and gardens, with many tracks and paths. The start was on a track near the sports pavilion, and courses looped around the hill in the northern part of the park. The weather was sunny, but very humid and hot; thunder threatened the prizegiving, but luckily it didn’t rain. There was a maze too, on the grass by the sports pavilion, and many of the competitors enjoyed racing round this.

Over 400 pupils took part in the Festival, travelling from schools all over Scotland. The competition classes are based on academic year, from P5 upwards. There are team trophies for each competition class, worked out from the total time of the best 3 results for the same school.

ESOC juniors did well in several classes:
P5/6 boys – Robert Sawyer 4th, Rowan Lawlor 10th, James Kruuk 29th
P7 boys – Scott Desmeulles 15th
S1 Boys – Joseph Lawlor 4th
S3 boys – Jamie Lawlor 12th
S5/6 boys – Ben Brown 2nd
P5/6 girls – Megan Brown 5th, Rachel Rose 7th
Megan and Rachel’s team (Bonaly Primary School) won the P5/6 Girls class.
P7 girls – Maja Robertson 1st
S3 girls – Rachel Brown 1st
