SSOF 2019Hopetoun House, 7 June

ESOC juniors had a great day out at the 2019 Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Festival, and won medals in several classes.

The Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Festival takes place every year in early June. The 2019 event was at Hopetoun House, and ESOC’s Anne Thom was the organiser, with Katy Lessells planning and many other ESOC members helping. Hopetoun House is near South Queensferry, on the shore of the Forth estuary. The terrain is mainly open parkland, with managed gardens and woodland, and a network of paths. Longer courses visited the surrounding deer park. There were various fun activities, including a very popular maze on the lawns by the house, and a great atmosphere.
Judy Bell commented: “It was a great day. Warm and sunny at the beginning, the rain threatened later - but held off until all were off home. Stunning location. Great to see the front lawns full of kids playing before and after their races. There was some serious racing in the mazes too.”

Teams travelled from schools all over Scotland, and nearly 400 pupils took part in the Festival. The competition classes are based on academic year, from P5 upwards. Some classes were very large. There are team trophies for each competition class, worked out from the total time of the best 3 results for the same school.
