SSOF 2022Scone Palace, 1 June

ESOC juniors enjoyed a lovely sunny day at the 2022 Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Festival!

This year saw a welcome return for the Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Festival, which is usually an annual event in early June. The 2022 event was held at Scone Palace, near Perth. Scone Palace has beautiful grounds, with open parkland, woodland, bushes and shrubs and an extensive path network. The longer courses ventured into open fields adjacent to the Palace.
ESOC’s Roger Scrutton was the planner, and several other ESOC members were helping, including Les & Margaret Dalgleish, Judy Bell, and Maja Robertson. Hanne Robertson and Elspeth Bleakley were there with school groups. There was a maze and other orienteering-themed games to keep everyone busy when they weren’t racing, and lots of inquisitive and noisy peacocks provided entertainment too. The weather was fine all day.

Teams travelled from schools all over Scotland, and nearly 300 pupils took part in the Festival. The competition classes are based on academic year, from P5 upwards.

Results for ESOC juniors:
P5/6 Boys – Ben Davidson-Ellis 6th, with Ianthe Bleakley (running in a pair), Luka Hasler-Brodie 18th (also running in a pair)
S1 Boys – Calum Robertson 1st
S1 Girls – Thea Thomas 11th
S2 Boys – Tate Woodhouse 3rd, Olly Simmers 6th
S2 Girls – Megan Brown 6th
S5/6 Boys – Ollie Tomczyk 9th

Further details about the event are in this news item on the Scottish Orienteering Association website, and the SSOF 2022 results are here.
