Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

Turf Event TurfEmbra10Oxgangs, Saturday 28 January

Orienteers and turfers enjoyed this event after the Edinburgh City Race.

TurfEmbra10 was planned by ElsieSpanner, and was designed to complement the urban orienteering race taking place earlier that afternoon in Oxgangs (see this news item). The event was from 3 till 4:30pm, and the event area stretched from Colinton through Oxgangs and Swanston to Buckstone. There was a good turnout, with 23 participants and 108 zones. All the zones except one in the extreme west were visited repeatedly, and there was plenty of excitement as the top few places kept changing. The weather was fine and mild - ideal turfing conditions.

ElsieSpanner commented:
“I had volunteered to plan zones for this event following a callout from ESOC and know the area well from my Turf exploits. Once I got access to create an event, it really was easy and fun!
I decided on a zone naming theme of band names, starting with some old favourites but also ending up with BarryManilow for a bit of variety as I ended up creating over a hundred zones for the level of entries. I tried to consider foot turfers as well as those on wheels when placing zones (on steps for example, easier on foot than bikes generally) and also have a few cheeky zones like the one up a hilltop cul-de-sac.
The event planning website felt intuitive and easy to use so I'd recommend anyone else who enjoys these events to pick up the baton when the opportunity arises.”

Everyone had a good time, and most gathered at the end of the event for the prizegiving, followed by a Crowdy at the zone ColintonPark, where several people gained their Crowdy-13 medal. Chocolate prizes were awarded to:
Bike - MarkkuEsoc
Foot - CoolEsocAds
Junior - ESOCKisaKat
ESOCWalter also awarded an ESOC selfie stick to the furthest-travelled competitor, MrJokerit (from Gothenburg).
The event map, with full results, is available on the TurfEmbra10 event page on the Turf website.
And there's another report from the event on Planet Gary's blog for 28 January.
