Explanation of event types

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun App.

Officials' Reports

Organiser's Report

A very varied crowd enjoyed the Figgate Park tonight. Visitors from abroad on the way to the 6Day, local people whose houses were on the map, seasoned Sprintelopers , several children on the Junior course and, best of all, some trying orienteering for the very first time and loving it!

Thanks to everyone for coming, to Lucie for planning, Robert for computing and Martin, Jim and Heidi who helped control the crowds and answer all the questions

Map / Terrain

Figgate Park is a scenic park with a large pond, picnic tables, walking paths & wildlife, including swans & otters, located in Portobello. The terrain is largely open, with short grass and extensive paths. Figgate Burn runs through the centre of the park and can only be crossed using the bridges and so runners should consider their route choice when crossing the burn is required on a leg.

There are small patches of woodland, may of which have brambles, nettles and other undergrowth. Runners might want to consider their route choices to avoid these. There are some areas of the park where new wildflower planting has taken place and some smaller paths added in these areas which are not mapped.

The park is popular with families and dog walkers and runners should take care around other park users.

The surrounding area includes a network of smaller, residential streets.

Based on a 2011 map by club members and Peel Land Surveys (urban section). Map scale is 1:5000.

Course maps will be printed at A4 on non-waterproof paper with control descriptions only on the map,

Safety Notes

General notes - please also read the Course specific notes below

  • Other Users: Figgate Park is very well used by the general public, including dog walkers, runners and children's games. Please respect their right to be there at the same time as you are orienteering.
  • Dogs: Competitor’s dogs are allowed and should be kept under very close control at all times.
  • SAFETY NOTE RE DOGS: Please give any dog walkers you encounter whilst running on your course extra space ie don’t run too close, especially if their dog/dogs are off lead. This applies to all competitors, not just those running with a dog. We always need to respect other people's right to be there.
  • Course Closure Time: All courses have a closure time of 8:30pm, please return to download by this time
  • You must report to Download even if you do not complete your course, so we know you are back safely, and we don’t have to mount a search for you.
  • Please check the weather forecast on the day and dress appropriately. The area can be exposed especially when windy and the grassy slopes slippery of wet, so please wear the most appropriate clothing and footwear for the course you are entering.
  • There will be undergrowth, and although the courses have been planned to avoid the worst if it, full leg cover is recommended.

Please read and respect the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct.

Course Information

There will be 3 courses:

  • Long - 4.1km straight line distance, optimal route ~6.9.km., with a Map Flip
  • Short - 2.7km straight line distance, optimal route ~4.km.
  • Junior - 1.3km Yellow/Orange standard

Under 16s must be accompanied at all times on the Long and Short courses

SI will be used to record the Start and Finish and it is taken on trust that you have visited all the controls, marked at this event by red/white tape

Planner's notes

  • The courses have been planned to avoid most vegetation (nettles, brambles etc), so shorts should be fine.
  • The boardwalk crossing the pond is under construction, so it has been marked as out of bounds
  • The vegetation generally appears bigger/ more dense in reality than on the map.
  • There are quite narrow paths along the burn under the bridge which will likely be used by all courses, competitors should take care.
  • There is also a population of swans which often sit on the path, competitors should give them plenty of space.
