TURF 2023 CompetitionSeptember 2023

Scotland finished in 2nd place in this year’s Turf Ultimate Region Fight.

The Turf Ultimate Region Fight is an annual multi-region Turf competition. Last year, Scotland came 4th out of 11 teams. This year, there were 12 teams in the competition, from various parts of Sweden, and also Minnesota.

The competition began at 11am on Sunday 3 September (the start of the new Turf round), and finished 4 weeks later, on Sunday 1 October, at the start of the next round.

The rules were slightly different from last year’s competition. There were still 3 separate scoring categories: turf points, number of takes, and number of round unique zones (i.e. zones that you hadn't already visited in the September round). For each of these 3 disciplines, the scores were calculated from the average of the top 20 members of the team on a week-by-week basis, and also for the whole month. (Previously, the scores were calculated from the average of the top 75% of the team.)

The weather in early September was very good, and Scotland got off to a great start, finishing week 1 in 1st place for turf points, 2nd place for zones taken, and 2nd place for round uniques, which gave an overall score of 31, just one point behind Västmanland.

Several of Scotland’s top scorers from week 1 were unavailable in week 2, and poor weather towards the end of the week reduced enthusiasm. Scotland slipped down to 5th place for zones taken in week 2, but a late rally on the Sunday morning regained one place. The final positions were 1st place for turf points, 4th place for zones taken, and 2nd place for round uniques, bringing the overall score up to 60.

Week 3 saw some more changes to the people available, and somewhat mixed weather including very windy conditions. After great efforts, Scotland finished the week in 1st place for turf points, 2nd place for zones taken, and 2nd place for round uniques, the same positions as in week 1, and the overall Scotland score increased to 91.

In week 4, the weather was very variable, but the team’s efforts continued. At the end of the week there were many distractions during the Scottish Turf Open Event weekend, and in the end Scotland were in 1st place for turf points, 4th place for zones taken and 2nd place for round uniques, giving a score of 29 points for the week.

Scores are also calculated for the whole month, which gave Scotland another 29 points. This brought the overall score to 149. Västmanland won the competition, with 160 points, and Norrbotten came 3rd, with 107 points.
