April Social 2014Monday 7 April
A wonderful evening in Fife - Spring had definitely sprung for our run in Aberdour. Beautiful views and wonderful weather.
Aberdour Social at the Williams’ Bed and Breakfast
The first social after the clocks changed was over in Fife. After a very wet and miserable day, we were blessed with a glorious evening run around the Fife shore. The map was an Open Orienteering Map that was fairly difficult to read, with different tones of grey scale for golf course, sea, sand and woods, but most people got to grips with it in the end. On the colour version the sand and golf course looked exactly the same colour - most confusing. The 60 minute Score Event was based on tourist spots past and present around Aberdour, and picked up the Village in Bloom award-winning sensory garden, the prize-winning station, coastal paths (including one that Mary neglected to tell people was just the shoreline), an eleventh-century monk's cave, the medieval church and the remains of pre-war diving boards that that once had the holiday makers flocking to the beach – unfortunately many people didn’t recognise the rusty metal remains as diving board frames, so any aquatic sport was accepted.
There were 26 competitors, and the prizes were won by Ben Brown for boys and younger men, with Jamie Cunningham as the runner up; Bill Gauld winner of the older men, with Dave Kershaw and Crawford as runners up; young women won by Gemma, with Katie Cunningham as runner up, and older women won by Janet Clark, and Alison as runner up.
Howard Williams runs the house as a bed and breakfast when it fits in with his social calendar. The B and B had just closed for 3 months and as he loves cooking he volunteered to empty the freezer of breakfast supplies and cook a buffet of sausages, black pudding, haggis, bacon and homemade bread, with some salad to make it a shade healthier for the orienteers. Laurence and Lucy Ward had made a yummy chocolate cake that all disappeared along with the breakfast, so with all the chat everybody must have enjoyed themselves.
A huge thanks to Mary and Howard for hosting this social at The Peartree (and to Laurence and Lucy for their help too) - a great time was had by all who were there, especially the evening breakfast!
