Burns Night Social - 2017Monday 30 January

Katie Cunningham, self-acclaimed “Chieftain o’ the Puddin’ race”, brilliantly describes the ESOC Burns Night festivities in the language of Rabbie Burns.

“Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?” No! And that’s why over 30 members of ESOC gathered for the annual Burns Supper. ‘We'll tak a cup of kindness yet’, the social secretary subtly suggested to the Kershaws, and the hint paid off - what a fantastic venue and fantastic hosts they were!

A clear night “all beneath the simmer moon”, the runners “kens the pleasure, feels the rapture”, of a quick sprint around Newington. Like “wee, sleekit, cow’rin, tim’rous beastie”s! they set off on a score event, visiting more post-boxes in 40 minutes (or an hour) than the fastest postman in the East. (Personally I was glad to see that they have not started collecting mail from the Observatory!)

The long course was close fought “though it were ten thousand mile”, with Heather and Mark racing back, shouting “let us do or die!”. Despite “the best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men”, Heather was the victor on timings! Alison and Katie (self-acclaimed “Chieftain o’ the Puddin’ race”) made it back in time to win the short, Janice a very close second. It was fair to say all the runners arrived back “Warm-reeking, rich” for the second half of the Social!

After a beautiful serenade from Bill, the Haggis was brought in to a fantastic ‘Address to a Haggis’ by Peter, and soon everyone was “rustic, haggis-fed”.

“Some hae meat and canna eat”, said no-one after the superb spread that was put on by the Monday ladies. A braw night indeed!
