ESOC members helped get orienteering started for Active Schools Edinburgh - a wonderful day of orienteering at Cammo for some Edinburgh P6 pupils.
For the past 6 years, Active Schools Edinburgh have organised Games@theHub for Primary 6 pupils from all Edinburgh schools to come and enjoy a day of sport. This year for the first time the schools had the chance to come and try orienteering. 12 schools came out to Cammo to learn about orienteering.
In the morning with the help of coaches from ESOC and orienteers from INT and EUOC, we played orienteering games to learn basic orienteering skills, before undertaking courses around the Estate after lunch.
There were 5 different courses available – all of a similar length and technical difficulty. The pupils undertook the courses in pairs, and with 10 pupils from each school, that meant that each pair from a school undertook a different course. If pupils missed out a control or accidently went to the wrong control, they were given a time penalty of 2 minutes for that control. Often at orienteering events mis-punching can result in disqualification, but time penalties are felt fairer for school events for beginners.
Points were awarded based on the position the school achieved on each course. 12 points for 1st, 11 for 2nd etc. and then added together. The final scores for the schools are shown in the table below and a link to the full results is given above.

Some fantastic results from everyone, and it was great to see so many out trying the courses, especially when they had never orienteered before. Hopefully they might come to more events in the future.
