JOK Chasing Sprint & Southern Championships, 12/13 March 2011
There were outstanding results from the handful of ESOC members who travelled south for these major events.
The 2011 JOK Chasing Sprint was held on Saturday 12 March at Shotover Country Park and Brasenose Wood, on the outskirts of Oxford. Shotover is an area of varied wood and grassland on a steep slope, featuring ancient coppice, beautiful oak plantation and hidden valleys. Brasenose is flat, fast forest requiring high-speed navigation. The event is in 2 parts (like the ESOC Sprint), with a Prologue followed by a Chase whose start times are based on the results from the Prologue, giving exciting head-to-head racing.
Claire Ward came 2nd in the Women’s Open race, Janice Nisbet came 4th in Women’s 55+, and Brian Yates came 44th in Men’s 55+.
Full results and more details about the event are on the JOK website.
The Southern Championships on Sunday 13 March was organised by Thames Valley Orienteering Club, at Hambleden, near Henley-on-Thames. This is a private estate, close to the River Thames, with very runnable woodland, a mixture of mature beech wood, thinned beech wood and coniferous plantation, on undulating ground. As it was expected to be very fast, courses were quite long. Comments after the event were very positive.
Claire Ward won W21E, Janice Nisbet came 2nd on W55L and Brian Yates came 6th in M65S.
