March Social 2015Monday 2 March
The March Social provided ESOC members with great fun finding post boxes in snowy South Edinburgh.
Ian and Eleanor Pyrah's home in Southern Edinburgh was the base for the March Social. Ian had planned a post-box score event with the simple concept of visiting as many of the mapped post-boxes as possible in 60 minutes and recording their numbers. To make things easier, and in view of likely inclement weather, he had provided two possible answers for each post-box on the answer sheet, one true and one false, so that all the competitor had to do was circle the correct answer. It didn't take long for some wag to point out that it might be worth hazarding a guess for any post-boxes not visited, as there would be an evens chance of getting the answer right! Ian's response was to quickly introduce a new ruling that wrong answers would receive a penalty score deduction.
Twelve set out on this challenge into the darkness of a cold dry evening, but very soon snow started to fall thick and fast, which looked extremely pretty from inside the house. All returned within the hour declaring that it had indeed been 'magical' to run through the swirling snow-flakes.
One torch failure meant that only eleven people had actually achieved any scores, but these had all scored very handsomely, partly helped by Ian having selected 4 of the nearest post-boxes to be rewarded with 50 points each and all the rest to be worth only 10 points. Top scorer was Martin Caldwell, with 310 out of the possible total of 370. There followed four people on 290 points: Alison Cunningham, Dave Kershaw, Anne Stevenson and Bill Stevenson. All of these were declared winners of one age category or another, and Katy Lessells was also awarded chocolate raisins for being not far behind (and she had successfully completed a jigsaw during the later part of the evening).
Meanwhile four late arrivals had swelled our numbers to a total of eighteen and we all enjoyed a finger buffet, warm drinks and plenty of social chitchat.
Huge thanks to Ian and Eleanor for being such excellent hosts.
