The Night Before Burns Night SocialSunday 24 January
The annual ESOC Burns Night Social had a new look this year. Janet Clark gives a flavour of the Social
Janet Clark writes:
It's amazing how much fun a Virtual Social can be. Yes we missed Peter's real-life Address to the Haggis, and joining hands for Auld Lang Syne; but we'd never have achieved a full-length rendition of Tam o' Shanter in real life, or managed to design an ESOC tartan!
During the build-up to Burns Night, people attempted, with varying success, to draw Strava traces of related items. Martin Caldwell's picture of Tam on the tail-less Meg crossing the Brig o' Doon was the clear winner, and Katherine Kirk drew a most realistic tooth to illustrate the Address to the Toothache. David Robertson's perspective drawing of Burns' Cottage in Alloway also deserves a mention. There was a haggis, a saltire, a louse, some roses and various mice, too!
The "tartan-designing workshops" involved new technology for some of us; Break-out rooms and drawing tools; and much hilarity for all. Sharon wore a very fetching tartan top to set the scene. There was also a quick test of knowledge of the meaning of some of the Scots words used by Burns; and the aforementioned recital of Tam o 'Shanter, reading verse about as the words appeared on the screen.
We finished up with an all-purpose toast: to the Bard, to the Social Conveners, to ESOC, and to our hopes and plans for 2021 in all its uncertainty. Virtual socialising at its best!
