ESOC juniors had a great day out at the 2017 Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Festival, with winners in two classes - congratulations!
The Scottish Schools’ Orienteering Festival takes place every year in early June. This year the event was at Drumpellier Country Park, near Coatbridge, east of Glasgow. As well as the ESOC juniors competing, several stalwarts from ESOC were helping on the day.
The most obvious feature at Drumpellier is the loch, and beyond it lies a wide variety of terrain, with a good network of paths and tracks and some gentle hills. The courses started on the east side of the loch and looped southwards through woodlands and open heath to finish on the west side of the loch. Despite the weather forecast, the sun came out and it was a lovely day. There was a great atmosphere, with lots of newcomers to the sport, and plenty of happy faces at the finish.
Over 400 pupils took part, from more than 60 schools all over Scotland, as far apart as Dalbeattie in the south, Fortrose in the north, Oban in the west and Athelstaneford in the east. The competition classes are based on academic year, from P5 upwards. There are team trophies for each competition class, worked out from the total time of the best 3 results for the same school.
ESOC juniors did well in several classes:
P5/6 boys (a very large class) – Luke Westmoreland 35th, Rowan Lawlor 72nd
P7 boys – Joseph Lawlor 10th
S2 boys – Jamie Lawlor 15th
P5/6 girls – Maja Robertson 1st, Megan Brown 9th
S2 girls – Rachel Brown 1st
