STAG Glasgow City Race weekendGlasgow Caledonian Uni, Kelvingrove Park, City Centre
Glasgow hosted the first of the "Euro City Race Tour" series last weekend, combined with some head-scratching indoor O at Glasgow university, and a WOC-relevant sprint (relay) at Kelvingrove Park. ESOC members were delighted to don their skimpiest racing vests and shorts, safe in the knowledge that this jungle was urban. ESOC president Walter Clark showed that age is no barrier in Friday's indoor sprint long race as he secured a 5th place. Sibling duo Ben & Megan Brown then came a close second in Saturday's 2-person Sprint Relay alongside 4 wins in the Individual Sprint (Emma Daley, Rebecca Daley, Helena Nolan and Luigi Lerose). Finally, at Sunday's eponymous City Race, we scored a trio of Silvers courtesy of Alexis Gow, Calum Robertson and Helena Nolan. Many thanks to the STAG organisers for yet again doing a sterling job putting on some great events with a great atmosphere.
Indoor Sprint (Glasgow Caledonian University)
Friday night saw the indoor sprint, summarised by Sally Lindsay as "immensely confusing (as expected) and great fun". ESOC president Walter Clark secured a 5th place in the Long race against some stiff (or perhaps less stiff?) younger competition, describing it as his best result in years and saying "The indoor race was by far the most complex and fun indoor 3D event that I’ve ever experienced. I had no idea what I was getting myself into and it was a brilliant experience, not just because I ended up doing well - honest".
ESOC results in the top half are shown below (see also the full results on the website).
Long (69) - Walter Clark 5th, Ben Brown 7th, Craig Nolan 14th, Calum Robertson 20th
Medium (58) - Helena Nolan 6th, Lucie Hamplova 9th, Heidi Ross 14th, Rosamund Vickers 14th
Short (26) - Judith Bell 3rd
Sprint Relay & Individual Sprint (Glasgow University and Kelvingrove Park)
Saturday offered two options; either a 2-person sprint relay (1 man, 1 woman) or an individual sprint. The terrain was a mix of two styles, with the all-urban university campus to start and the mixed urban+ parkland of Kelvingrove to finish. This was raced as two separate legs for the relay, or as two parts for the individual sprint. The unusually warm weather meant that the park was busy with sun lovers, posing an additional unmapped navigational challenge for runners threading a route through.
In the sprint relay, ESOC was represented by the sibling duo Ben & Megan Brown, as well as oldhand-meets-newcomer combination of Walter Clark & Carolyn Dyson. After 80 minutes of orienteering, Megan & Ben were pipped by just 46 seconds into the runner up spot behind Quentin Harding and Ruth Ker of CLARO. Meantime Walter & Carolyn managed to mispunch - but were in illustrious company with 6 of 19 elite teams also mispunching!
In the individual sprint, ESOC had 4 winners: Emma Daley (YJW), Rebecca Daley (YW), Luigi Lerose (MV) and Helen Nolan (WSV). Other standout results were Heidi's 2nd place in the Women's Open and Emma Anderson's 3rd place in Veteran Women. Asked about her great result, Heidi commented on her strategy of being more decisive: "This sprint I tried to always be moving and be decisive as possible. It stopped me overthinking my route choice and trying to work out the optimum route which takes time. Instead I focused on entering/leaving controls quickly and moving onto the next control asap even if it meant my route choice was a tad longer. I was able to make up the time by running faster". Meantime Emma highlighted the tough conditions: "It was a total surprise tbh as the previous week I was last at Glenrothes in a field of a similar size! It was hot and humid, so my running felt very laboured and I know I made some incorrect route choices. Maybe it was just that others were suffering more 😆".
