Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club

STAG Winter Score 2, 2015Cathkin Braes, 11 January

Some brave souls from ESOC competed at the second STAG winter score event, in atrocious weather.

Cathkin Braes Country Park is a fairly wild area on the southern edge of Glasgow, with deciduous woodland and some steep slopes giving good views to the north.
There was a time limit of 60 minutes, with 28 controls.

Janet Clark reports: “Most people encountered some form of snow on the way to the event. Once there, huge willpower was needed to even get out of the car. The car park was quite full, with intrepid mountain-bikers setting off, seemingly oblivious to the weather. The bike trails were specially constructed for the Commonwealth Games last summer. Once started on the orienteering, it was relatively sheltered downhill in the woods, but inevitably one had to come back uphill into the teeth of the weather. I’m sure everyone is very grateful to Terry and Gerry for going ahead with this event under the conditions and providing masochistic entertainment for those who braved it. Quite a few who had entered stayed in bed.”

ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Mike Stewart – 8th (10,990 points)
Terry Johnstone – 10th (10,890 points)

Full results are available on the STAG Score 2 event item, on the STAG website.

This event was the second in a series; the others were:
STAG Winter Score 1, Pollok Park, 4 January
STAG Winter Score 3, Palacerigg Country Park, 18 January
STAG Winter Score 4, Drumpellier Country Park, 15 February
