STAG Winter Score 3, 2015Palacerigg Country Park, 18 January

The third STAG winter score event took place in welcome sunshine, with snow underfoot.

Palacerigg Country Park is on high ground just to the SE of Cumbernauld, and has varied terrain including grassland, moorland, woodland and open fields of rare breed farm animals, as well as an area of complex quarry workings. There was a time limit of 60 minutes, with 28 controls.

Mark Wood reports: “The sun greeted the ESOC regulars at Palacerigg, though it was cold and the roads leading to the park and the carpark itself were covered with snow. However, once on the move it was good to be out and running. Most people headed west to a collection of high pointers and ignored the lone 600 pointer out to the North East. The going was tough in places; lots of windblown and tussocky grass to sap energy out of the legs. All the controls were a long way from the finish, so lots of people were late back. Those who decided to bag all the controls were over the time limit but due to generous penalties, it was well worth the effort (even for a certain ESOCer who was out for almost 2 hours). Much discussion about route choice took place in the warm café afterwards, as well as enjoying the children's playground in the snow.”

ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Clive Masson – 4th (8820 points)
Mark Wood – 9th (7380 points)
Alastair Lessells – 15th (5800 points)
Terry Johnstone – 17th (5630 points)
Maggie Scrugham – 18th (5610 points)
Margaret Dalgleish – 21st (5220 points)
Robert Findlay – 25th (4960 points)
