STAG Winter Score 3, 2016Cumbernauld Park, 17 January

A winter wonderland awaited those who competed at STAG’s third winter score event.

Cumbernauld Park is at the NE end of Cumbernauld. As well as open parkland around the 18th Century Cumbernauld House, the map covers the ancient woodland of Cumbernauld Glen (a Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve including Crow Wood), and a small industrial estate to the north, so there was plenty of variety. The area is quite hilly, and is split by a railway line in a deep valley. Strategies varied – some ventured across the railway line for higher-scoring controls, while others stayed nearer at hand, visiting more, but lower-scoring, controls. Many were late back. The weather was cold but dry and bright, and the woodland looked beautiful under a covering of fresh snow.

As at the previous STAG winter score events, there was a time limit of 60 minutes, and there were 24 controls whose points value ranged from 300 to 700, with a bonus system allowing anyone who had visited all the controls to revisit 6 of them for additional points (no-one managed to get any bonus points this time). There was a 10 point penalty for each second late back.

ESOC members in the top half of the results were:
Crawford Lindsay – 10th (8,540 points)
Mark Wood – 17th (7480 points)
Sally Lindsay – 20th (7,100 points)
Kerry Wood – 22nd (6,400 points)
